The most common freeze burst in the South starts at a faucet, and it is almost always the same story: the garden hose was still connected.

The hose rule comes first

A connected hose traps water in the pipe behind your wall. When it freezes, it expands backward and splits the line inside the wall, where you cannot see it. You find out weeks later as a stain on the drywall. So before any cover goes on: disconnect every hose, drain it by walking it out straight, and leave hoses off until spring. This costs nothing and prevents the single most common claim in the category.

How a faucet cover actually works

A cover does one thing: it traps a pocket of dead air against the wall, and the house's own heat keeps that pocket above freezing. Which means a cover only works if it seals to the wall and actually fits your spigot. A cover hanging loose in the wind protects nothing, and plenty of people have found a cracked faucet with the cover still on it. Cinch it snug. On a windy night, tape the edges, moving air defeats any loose covering.

Walk the whole house

Most homes have three to five spigots, and almost everyone forgets one, usually behind shrubs or on the garage side. Count them in daylight, match your covers to your count, and photograph each one so freeze night runs off your own photos.

No covers tonight?

A thick sock or rag over the spigot, a plastic grocery bag over that, sealed to the wall with tape or a rubber band. The goal is trapped dead air, not waterproofing. It works once, tonight. The permanent version goes on the shelf for every winter after.

Frost free faucets are not exempt

A frost free hose bib protects itself only when the hose is off and the faucet can drain. With a hose attached, it fails like any other spigot. The hose rule outranks the hardware.
