# Backflow Preventer Freeze Protection: The Pipe That Bursts First
There is a brass assembly sticking out of the ground near your water meter or wherever your irrigation ties in. Most homeowners cannot name it. In a hard freeze, it bursts first.
What it is and why it lives outside
A backflow preventer keeps water from your irrigation system from siphoning backward into your drinking water. Code requires it, and code puts it outside, above grade, where the cold can reach it, because it has to sit at a high point in the line. So it stands there all winter: a fitting full of water, made of brass that sheds heat fast, completely exposed.
Why it fails first
Small volume of water, high surface area, zero insulation, and usually no flow through it at all on a winter night. It is the textbook first casualty, and when it splits, water runs until someone notices, often at the meter bill.
The thirty second fix
Before the first freeze: an insulated backflow cover, cinched over the whole assembly. That is the entire job. If a warning drops and you own nothing, wrap it in towels and put a bucket or a foam cooler upside down over the top, weighted with a brick. Trapped dead air is the mechanism either way.
For the season, two more steps: set the irrigation controller to off, actually off, not rain delay, so the system never pushes fresh water through brittle fittings mid freeze, and close the irrigation supply valve. If your system has drain valves, open them.
Find yours today
Walk toward your meter, then along wherever the irrigation heads off. You are looking for brass or PVC standing vertically, sometimes inside a green box, often fully in the open. If you have irrigation, you have one. Photograph it in daylight so on freeze night you are working from your own photo instead of searching a dark yard.
